Summer, warm weather and the boating season are fast-approaching ... Marion County residents can look forward to enjoying time on the water with family and friends. The Marion County Sheriff's Office wants to make sure that you have a safe and fun boating season.

This year, we will again join the Oregon Marine Board to provide free boat safety inspections. To take advantage of this opportunity, residents are invited to bring their boat to the parking lot of Wholesale Sports, 1260 Lancaster SE in Salem on Saturday, March 30th, 2013 between 10:00am and Noon. No appointment is necessary.

To expedite the process take a few minutes to pre-inspect your boat to make sure it'll meet the standard for successfully passing the inspection.

Be sure that you have the following:

Oregon Boater Education Card - if operating a motor boat over 10HP Personal Flotation Devices
Ore Type IV - Throw able PFD
Navigation Lights for nighttime boating
Sound Producing Device or Air canister
Fire Extinguisher(s)
Flame Arrestor (Backfire)
Clean air ventilation vents
Certificate of number or rental agreement
Identifying numbers reflecting current registration
Hull identification number displayed on boat

Once your boat has passed inspection, you'll be issued an inspection sticker valid for 2013. There will be no citations issued for boats failing the inspection.

For additional, contact Sheriff's Office Volunteer Coordinator Doc Nelson at 503.589.3250.
